This article contains guidance on recent changes to Mastercard's policies which prevent PayPal from offering Mastercard as a funding source within the PayPal wallet when depositing funds with Lotteries and Wagering businesses from Wednesday 31 March 2021.
If you have experienced issues with depositing funds via PayPal or have received deposit failure emails relating to your Subscriptions where you have chosen PayPal as your backup payment method, please read on.
What has changed?
As part of recent policy changes, Mastercard now requires PayPal to request the CVV/CVC number (the 3-digit number on the back of your Mastercard) of any Mastercard which is used within the PayPal wallet every time a customer transacts with a Lotteries or Wagering business.
The Lott offers customers the ability to connect their PayPal account to their online Lotteries account, enabling faster deposits, the ability to withdraw funds to PayPal and use PayPal as a backup payment method for Subscription purchases. PayPal is currently unable to 'prompt' customers for the CVV/CVC number of their Mastercard for each of these transactions.
Unfortunately this policy change means it is no longer possible for PayPal to offer Mastercard as an available funding source within the PayPal wallet when transacting with The Lott. In all instances where customers have chosen a Mastercard as their preferred funding source, PayPal will attempt to use any other funding sources within the customer's PayPal wallet (for example a Bank Account or VISA Debit or Credit Card) before issuing a payment decline.
Why has my PayPal deposit been declined?
If you have connected your PayPal wallet to your online Lotteries account, and have chosen a Mastercard as your preferred funding source within your PayPal wallet, and you have no other funding sources available (for example a Bank Account or VISA Debit or Credit Card), your deposit request will be declined by Mastercard.
How to resolve this issue
To resolve this issue, you can choose to deposit funds with a Debit or Credit Card stored within your online Lotteries account, or you can add an alternative funding source within your PayPal wallet by visiting PayPal's website.
Why are the deposits for my Subscriptions failing?
If you have selected PayPal as the backup payment method for your Subscriptions (used when your account balance is running), and have chosen a Mastercard as your preferred funding source within your PayPal wallet and have no other funding sources available (for example a Bank Account or VISA Debit or Credit Card), your deposit request will be declined by Mastercard.
How to resolve this issue
Each time a deposit for your Subscriptions fails, you will be notified by email of this event. To resolve this issue you can choose to update your backup payment method within your online Lotteries account to a Debit or Credit Card stored within your account, or you can add an alternative funding source within your PayPal wallet by visiting PayPal's website.
Your Subscription will attempt to purchase three times before your Subscription is suspended. Once your Subscription is suspended you will be notified by email of this event. Once you have resolved your deposit issues, we recommend reactivating your Subscription as soon as possible to ensure you do not miss out on your next entry.
